How does one get marked?
by On the Fence inok, i've been involved with jw's for 15 years or so, but i've not been deep enough into any "clicks" to know how someone gets "marked".
will someone explain?
i'm sure i must have been marked more than once for stupid reasons - only going to 2-3 of the 5 weekly meetings (hey, some of us do have to do laundry every now and then), not commenting enough (they wouldn't want to hear my comments now), not going out in service enough, etc.

>"Some things, like the bald head, were addressed in local needs talk. Of course it's discussed in the most caring way, to lovingly warn the others of a possible bad association." Hi Willowmoon, You're sh***ing me when you say they marked you for a chemo induced bald head, right? What did they "lovingly" say to you? Better yet, what was your response to them. I think that would have been my ticket out the door right then. Don't pass go, don't collect $200. I would have been out of there but probably not before I said enough cuss words to get D/F first! I hope you're cancer free now. For some reason, my posts don't show up as HTML. Maybe because I use a mac?!? Anyone know?

I didn't word my question correctly. What I want to know is how does the fact that someone is "marked" get around? Is it spread like gossip or is there a meeting amongst the elders or ??? Now that I know you can be marked for just about anything, I could make a long list of the things that I've likely been marked for... let's see... 1. Not attending all the meetings 2. wearing boots with a dress. (there was 2 feet of snow on the ground, for Pete's sake) 3. wearing dress pants to a meeting once instead of a dress/skirt. Oh no, I'm going to not be resurected for that one! 4. owning sports cars instead of "service" cars. 5. hating being single and hoping for a "mate". Damn those natural desires! 6. working overtime a few times a year. 7. having worldy family and friends that I refused to shun 8. reading Stephen King novels or other non-JW magazines/books I could go on like this but I won't bore you any longer.

Dune, What a load of #@$#. Get "marked" for going to college. Ya know, I had an elder tell me that, in the round-about way that they use, that I should quit my decent paying job because it required overtime occasionally. He said it would be better for me to be a ditch digger or sewage worker and not work overtime and make much less money, than to keep my white collar job and have to miss meetings sometimes. ha ha ha. I don't see him playing around in sewage. Easy for him to say. So how do the elders or other sanctimonious people go about marking someone? Is it just spread like gossip or what?

For instance; Judge lest not ye be judged... oh, wait. That's not the NWT version. Maybe that would go something like this... ahem... "Judge everyone by this ridiculous set of arbitrary rules that the organization has established but can not be found in the bible. Make sure you constantly judge yourself by these rules, too. If you live up to this, you can look down your nose at everyone you think does not." ;)

Hi Bryan, No, I don't have any family in the org. I haven't yet told my family that I no longer consider myself part of the org. I'm sure they would all be quite happy about that. That also makes it easier for me to leave. I was a convert not a 2nd or 3rd generation.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. I look forward to many interesting discussions here. By the way, does anyone know how to get a picture, etc. to show up? I loaded one, as it instructed, but it won't show up.

Thanks for your reply. After re-reading my post, I need to correct myself. I don't think the people in the organization are not "good", I think they're brainwashed. There are many good people within the organization, they're just misguided, IMHO. Why else would people allow their children to die if they need a blood transfusion. That is one aspect of the religion I didn't ever fully agree with.

Hello everyone. This is my first time posting, although I've read for a while. I've been a (bad example of) a witness now for about 15 years. In all those 15 years, I did not at any time have a good friend within the congo. I even changed congos a couple of time hoping that I might find some friends in the organization. Maybe the reason I didn't ever make any good friends is because I didn't go to every single meeting, every single week. I work and have health problems that limit my energy. That's why I say I'm a bad example of a witness. Even though I didn't have any friends (other than worldly, and I wasn't about to give them up), I still felt it was "The Truth" and continued to go to some of the meetings. looking back, I realize now that the entire time I was involved with the organization, I wasn't happy. I did have a sense of well being because of my spiritual beliefs but other than that I was basically miserable. Then, when I became ill and spent some time in a hospital, not one person from the congo came to visit or even called. I couldn't believe it. Friends of my worldly friends, who I barely knew called and were more concerned than anyone in the congo. Talk about a bad witness!! Well, I started drifting away from the organization after that. I just don't see how the self-righteous people at the congo can call themselves "good" when they seem so uncaring. I guess for me it's a bit easier to walk away since I didn't really make any good friends. It's not easy spiritually, though. What have you all done for spiritual fulfillment once you left? I still want to please God and live a good life. I still carry the guilt of not going to a meeting. Thanks for listening, On The Fence.
